Local Marketing: Local Directories
There are a million and one ways to find what you need on the internet. For some, Google, Yahoo, and MSN’s search engines are enough. For others, they go to sites they trust with product reviews and objective information about a company.
These places are called directories and there are thousands of them on the internet and many of them are targeted to the product and services you sell.
It would take forever to list all of them here so what we will do is provide the top 5 must be on directories and 2 extras.
1. Google Local, Your business listing on Google Local is mandatory, these search results appear first on Google and are far more likely to be clicked than the Organic Listings.
The Tricks to a good listing:
1. Use your city name in your business title: Gerald’s Roofing Company Chicago.
2. Use city targeted keywords in your listing: Chicago Roofing, Roofers Chicago, etc.
Yahoo Local: Works very much like Google Local make sure that you are using location targeted keywords in your listing.
Best of the Web: Wide range of topics and includes reviews.
Merchant Circle: Allows you to provide all the basics of your business, but you can also write your own blog and create partnerships with other local businesses.
2 Extras!
The two extra directories are DMOZ and the Yahoo Business Directory. Google loves bothof these sites more than life itself but there are two drawbacks.
1. DMOZ, due to its popularity and the fact that its manually audited, it can literally take months to get on it. It only takes a moment to submit your site but don’t expect it to make your business.
2. The Yahoo Business Directory is Free to non-profits, but is around $289 for retail and service oriented businesses. It is highly used however and considering how much that Yellow Pages ad costs that doesn’t provide any return, could be worth it.
To find directories that are specific to your city or business, simply search
(city name) directory, and (topic) directory into whichever search engine your prefer!
If you are having any trouble with these directories and getting the most out of them. We would be honored if you would allow us to help you.
